Make Obamacare work for you.
HealthCare.gov is hard to navigate, and it won't tell you which plan gets you the most coverage for the least money. Coverage Decider checks Medicaid, your job's plan and your tax credit, then ranks the plans that fit your doctors and budget.
Built on 2027 rules from the Affordable Care Act (opens in a new tab) and plan data from HealthCare.gov (opens in a new tab). Not a government site.
Obamacare questions
Is this Obamacare?
Yes. Obamacare is the Affordable Care Act (opens in a new tab). Its Marketplace plans are sold on HealthCare.gov (opens in a new tab) and state marketplaces, with tax credits that lower what you pay each month.
Why not just use HealthCare.gov?
You'll still enroll there. HealthCare.gov lists the plans; Coverage Decider ranks them for your doctors, prescriptions and budget, and shows what a bad year would cost. Then compare and enroll on HealthCare.gov (opens in a new tab).
When can I sign up for 2027?
Open enrollment runs Nov. 1, 2026, to Jan. 15, 2027. Enroll by Dec. 15 for coverage that starts Jan. 1. Dates and deadlines on HealthCare.gov (opens in a new tab).
Is there an income limit for the 2027 tax credit?
Yes. Above 400% of the federal poverty level (opens in a new tab), there's no tax credit in 2027: $63,840 for one person or $132,000 for a family of four (2026 figures, higher in Alaska and Hawaii).
What if my job offers health insurance?
If the job's cheapest plan for the employee alone costs less than 10.22% of household income and meets minimum value, the employee can't get the tax credit. Family members are judged on what covering the family costs.
Could I get Medicaid instead?
Maybe. We check your state's Medicaid and CHIP limits before any plan, and you can apply for Medicaid (opens in a new tab) any time of year.
